The Flaminio Stadium, located right in the center of Rome, is in an advanced state of disrepair. No football match has been played in the “Eternal City” arena for more than 3 decades.

With AS Roma and Lazio playing their matches at the Olimpico, few have heard of the Flaminio arena, completely forgotten by the Italian authorities.

The stadium with a capacity ofThe 24,973 seater was designed by the legendary architect Pier Luigi Nervi and was inaugurated in 1959 and is one of the most beautiful “forgotten” stadiums in Europe. It was considered a “masterpiece of sports architecture,” he notessportsport.ba.

Today it looks like a real ruin, with the lawn completely covered in greenery and the seats in the VIP area completely destroyed. The walls, many of them covered in graffiti, are also in a severe state of disrepair. An unusual sight for a metropolis like Rome.

The cited source also says that in the past the Romanian authorities considered renovating the arena and turning it into the home of Lazio, but the idea was never put into practice. The capacity of the stadium would have been increased to 40,000 seats.

The citizens of Rome are unhappy that the authorities are simply ignoring the arena, instead of renovating it, turning it into a tourist attraction or even demolishing it.

AS Roma and Lazio last played at this arena in the 1989-1990 season, when the Olimpico was being renovated for the 1990 World Cup. The Italian national rugby team also played here.

The Flaminio Stadium was built on the site of the former Stadio Nazionale and hosted the final of the 1960 Summer Olympics.
