Trump on the new mayor of New York: he started badly
— I think it was a very angry speech, definitely against me and I think he should be very nice to me. You know, I'm the one who has to approve a lot of the stuff that goes to him. So he got off to a bad start, Trump said. He again called the mayor-elect a communist and said that “communism hasn't worked for a thousand years” and “he doubts it will work this time.”
Trump, however, said he wants his hometown to succeed. When asked if he would contact the new mayor, he said yes it would be more appropriate if it was “Mamdani who reached out to him.”
Referring to Tuesday's elections in New Jersey and Virginia, Trump said he did not count on the Republicans winning and assessed that the party's candidate for governor of Virginia (current Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears) was weak. At the same time he admitted that he expected a better result for the candidate he supported in New Jersey Jack Ciattarelli, who lost to Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill by as many as 13 percentage points, despite polls predicting a tight race.
Trump at the same time he rejected the allegations, that the reason for the Conservatives' defeat was their failure to keep their promises to stop inflation. The president, contrary to the facts, claimed that grocery prices had dropped during his administration, but Republicans didn't talk about it enough.
Supreme Court decides on tariffs. “It went well”
In an interview with Fox News, the US president also referred to Wednesday's hearing in the Supreme Court on the legality of most of the tariffs he imposed.
Despite the judges' skeptical voices during Wednesday's deliberations, Trump said he “heard it went well.” He reiterated that his failure in this matter would mean an economic disaster. He pointed to the example of Beijing's threats to impose export restrictions on rare earth metals on all countries of the world. He argued that if it were not for his threat to impose an additional 100 percent tariffs, China would implement its intentions, and the entire world economy would plunge into a deep recession.
