The man who underwent the world's first face transplant gets married
In 2018, Joe DiMeo from the United States fell asleep behind the wheel of his car after a night shift and crashed into a guardrail. The car caught fire and DiMeo was pulled out of it by witnesses, but 80% of his body was affected by third-degree burns.
The man had to be placed in a medically induced coma, his fingertips were amputated and more than 20 reconstructive surgeries were performed. And in August 2020, 26-year-old Joe became the first person in history to undergo a face and both arm transplant.
The operation took about 23 hours and had only a 6% success rate, but it was a success.
After learning about Joe's story, 33-year-old Jessica Coby wrote him a message on social media.
They soon began a romantic relationship, and the other day DiMeo announced their engagement.
