One of the last veterans of the Soviet-Japanese War has died. The preliminary cause is acute heart failure. Stepan Chernov was 98 years old. His body was found by his daughter. He did not live to see the anniversary of the victory over the Land of the Rising Sun for less than five months.
For reference: at the age of 17, the man was drafted into the army, and in August 1945, as part of the 354th separate marine battalion, he participated in the Seisin landing operation in the Far East. With the rank of junior sergeant, he was part of a reconnaissance company of machine gunners, which was assigned to land east of the port of Racine (now the territory of the DPRK), block the coastal road and prevent the approach of enemy reinforcements. The task was completed: positions in the port were held until the main forces of the 25th Army arrived.
