The number of foreigners who died on Elbrus has doubled over the past three years. Climbers do not register before climbing and increasingly underestimate the difficulty of the path to the top.
Every year 25 thousand people climb the mountain, 15% of them are foreigners. Most often people come are Italians, Turks, Germans, Chinese and Indians. Many of them do not register with the Ministry of Emergency Situations, not understanding the seriousness of climbing Elbrus, where the weather changes every ten minutes. On the day of the death of the Turkish climbers, Vitaly Shipilov was climbing the mountain with a couple of tourists. Then five foreigners walked around them, and after a while the weather changed dramatically.
The Turks went higher and got lost in the fog. The guide says that the foreigners were not registered, they had neither a walkie-talkie nor a GPS navigator – it was difficult to keep in touch at such an altitude. When the rescue team reached the top, they found the bodies of two climbers and another in poor condition. After this incident, local authorities ask all foreigners to register with the Ministry of Emergency Situations and contact only professional guides.
