He stated that Russia would not comply with this decision.

Answering the question whether a hypothetical payment could help warm relations between the Russian Federation and Georgia, the Russian leader’s press secretary noted: “We believe that this is a separate topic, a separate substance.”

Context

Russian-Georgian war started on August 8, 2008 and lasted until August 12. The conflict flared up around South Ossetia and Abkhazia – regions that, according to former Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, have been occupied since the early 90s. According to official Georgian data, in the August 2008 conflict 413 people were killed, including 166 military, 16 police and 220 civilians, and 2,234 people were injured.

On October 14, 2025, the ECHR in Strasbourg issued a decision according to which Russia must pay more than €253 million in compensation for “non-property damage” to Georgian citizens.
