The Ukrainian army has been attacking Russian energy facilities for months with long-range weapons using intelligence provided by the US, the British newspaper Financial Times wrote on Sunday.

According to the newspaper, which cited Ukrainian and American officials, the U.S. and Ukrainian actions are “a coordinated effort to weaken the Russian economy and force (Russian leader Vladimir) Putin to negotiate.”

American intelligence enabled Ukrainians to attack important energy facilities, including oil refineries, far beyond the front lines.

“The intelligence exchange is the latest sign that (US President Donald) Trump has strengthened his support for Ukraine as his frustration with Russia grows,” the FT said.

After Trump's meeting with Putin in Alaska in mid-August, the American president spoke openly several times about his disappointment with the Russian leader over the lack of progress in the peace process.

On Saturday, Axios reported that Donald Trump talked by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the possibility of transferring Tomahawk cruise missiles to the Ukrainian side.

The portal noted that last Monday, Trump stated that he had more or less made a decision on the transfer of Tomahawks to Ukraine. The US president noted that he wants to know how the Ukrainians want to use this weapon, the range of which allows it to hit very distant targets in Russia. (PAP)
