In order for roses to bloom magnificently, they need to be properly cared for. And shelter for the winter is one of the important agricultural techniques. But there is a lot of wisdom in this matter, which was shared with readers by an experienced gardener, author of books about roses, Alexandra Ivanovna Teorina. She has been breeding these flowers for more than 30 years and has perfectly mastered the secrets of growing them.
According to Teorina, in the autumn, each rose bush requires an individual approach.
Autumn pruning is an important procedure
Incorrect or untimely pruning can cause significant damage to the plant and even lead to its death in winter.
Pruning hybrid tea roses. To obtain high-quality flowers on long stems or to grow roses for cutting, pruning is carried out briefly, leaving two or three buds on each shoot.
Pruning polyanthus roses. When planting, remove all weak shoots, and cut off strong shoots by 3–5 buds.
Pruning roses from the Rambler group. The main pruning is carried out immediately after flowering. All faded shoots are removed at the base of the bush.
Sheltering roses for the winter – protecting them from the cold
Teorina's book discusses in detail the method of air-dry covering of roses. For this purpose, a special frame is made, which is placed above the rose bushes. Several layers of different materials are placed on the frame. First, insulation, such as spunbond or cardboard, is placed on the roses. Then a waterproof film is stretched over the insulation. It is usually made from polyethylene.
This method of covering roses is very popular and reliable. The air layer and insulation protect the plants from frost, and the waterproof film prevents excess moisture from getting inside.
