Will Donald Trump meet Xi Jinping after all? A surprising declaration

— No, I didn't cancel (the meeting), but I don't know if it will happen. But I'll be there anyway, so I assume it can happen, Trump told reporters.

Earlier on Friday, Trump said he saw no reason to meet with China's leader given China's announced export restrictions on rare earth metals. Trump was scheduled to meet the Chinese leader at the upcoming APEC summit in South Korea. As Reuters reported on Saturday, Beijing never confirmed the meeting.

Trump added that China's announcement of export restrictions on rare earth metals was “shocking.”

– We'll see what happens, that's why I set the date as November 1 – he emphasized when asked whether he would withdraw the tariffs on China announced that day if Beijing gave up its restrictions.

Trump announced earlier that he would impose a new 100% tariff on China on November 1. He also announced the introduction of export controls on critical software.

When asked what else could be affected by export controls, he replied that there were many options. – We have planes, we have plane parts (…) They have a lot of Boeing planes, they need parts – he added.
