The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, also spoke, pointing out that the award was a tribute to the tireless work of Machado, the leader of the democratic opposition in Venezuela, for justice.

As reported by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Maria Corina Machado was honored for her “tireless work for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for fighting for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” When told about the award, Machado said it was an award “for the entire movement.”
