A22, the company representing “European Super League”, with the project launched by Real Madrid and Barcelona, negotiates with UEFA the reconfiguration for 2027 of the competition. “Unify League” would have two groups of 18 teams, with matches between the league borders and other more balanced parties between outsiders, being transmitted free of charge on an online platform, under certain conditions.

“The proposal of a champions league in an even more attractive format is the result of seven rounds with UEFA in the last eight months,” as Mundo Deportivo writes.

The competition would be transmitted on the platform available free of charge with advertising or no advertisements with a premium paid option

The “key innovation” is that in the beginning phase, with two groups instead of the current one, the best ranked 18 clubs would play the eight matches exclusively against other elite teams, guaranteeing large confrontations at each stage.

This “Super League” would be transmitted on the proposed Unify platform and available free of charge with advertising or without advertisements through a premium paid option.

According to the information obtained by the Catalan newspaper, Super Liga presented to UEFA a final “peace” proposal, which contains two fundamental points: a global free matches broadcast platform and a revised competition format, which would keep the strengths of the present Champions League, but Adds a more spectacular note.

After A22 filed an application in December 2024 for the recognition of an alternative competition, following the favorable decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJUE), the company, clubs and UEFA have since had seven meetings (some at the UEFA headquarters), to outline a possible agreement and end the deadlock in 2021.

From 2027, a new format of the Champions League with two groups of 18 teams? Strong matches in the first and balanced in the other!

As Joan Laporta confirmed, the president of Barcelona, the negotiations were divided into three fields: governance, broadcast and the format of the competition. Regarding the latter aspect, the A22 will propose the improvement of the current system, which produces enough unbalanced matches in the group stage.

UEFA's new proposal introduced a minor but significant change. The 36 clubs that currently participate in the Champions League will be divided into two groups, and will meet again in the eliminatory phases.

The qualification will remain related to the performances in the National Championship, but once the 36 teams will be established, they will be divided into two series.

  • Group 1 (clubs ranked on places 1-18 depending on the UEFA coefficient): they would play 8 matches against top opponents (for example, five -star matches, such as Barcelona – PSG);

  • Group 2 (clubs ranked in places 19-36): they would also play 8 matches, but in a more balanced set, determined by drawing lots, as in the current system.

This structure is aimed at Raising the value level of the group phase with more important matches, but at the same time offering clubs ranked on 19-36 (in the second group) real chances to compete for winning the trophy.

Joan Laport leaves Real Madrid alone in the Super League?!

The relationships between UEFA and the Super League have improved considerably compared to the hostility in recent years, as demonstrated by the many meetings that have taken place. Although not a final agreement has been reached, The offer represents an important step forward.

The next one would return to the Continental Forum based in Nyon. If approved, the new format would be launched in 2027 and will be folded on the next commercial cycle for the transmission rights of the Champions League.

In other news, but also about the Super League, it is to be reported to approach the Barcelona to ECA (the supreme body of European clubs), after President Joan Laporta and the counterpart of PSG and at the ECA, Nasser al Khelaïfi, had a “very productive” meeting on the occasion of the Barcelona – PSG 1-2 match.

Mystery meeting between Joan Laporta, Aleksander Ceferi and Nasser al-Khelaifi

According to information published by sports and confirmed by AS, discussions for restoring relationships are ongoing. And more, Laporta was personally invited by Al Khelaïfi to the General Assembly of ECA, which will take place on October 8 and 9 in Rome.

Laporti's presence at the forum that brings together the main clubs in Europe would be of huge importance, as Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only two entities left outside of the ECA of the Super League (Juventus has renounced the hostile position).

“The return of Barcelona among the members of the ECA would mean to leave Real Madrid alone in the fight against UEFA and ECA, strategic and business partners through the joint venture,” he drew the conclusion.

It would be a favor returned to Ceferi, who would have advised for a favorable approach to the Catalan club in the financial fair play.
