After losing the election in Buenos Aires, Javier Mile suffers a major defeat in the Argentine Parliament

The legislators in Argentina began to reject the president's austerity measures, to the satisfaction of pensioners, teachers and doctors protesting against his drastic policy, writes AFP.

The Argentine deputies rejected a large majority, Wednesday, Javier Milei's veto on the laws on the financing of public universities and the main pediatric hospital in the country, a new defeat for the President of Libertarian.

The laws that the president would have wanted to cancel stipulate an update of the university budget taking into account the inflation of 2023 and the improvement of the salaries of the teachers and of the auxiliary personnel.

They also declare the “pediatric emergency” for the largest pediatric hospital in the country, Garrahan (4,700 employees).

In a Parliament in which Javier Milei does not have a majority, the deputies rejected these two qualified majority. In order for the laws to enter into force, the opposition now needs the Senate to reject them with a two -thirds.

At the announcement of the vote of the deputies, the university cadres, the employees of hospitals and the pensioners gathered around the Parliament have expressed their joy, writes AFP. The protesters danced, hugging and chanting “the homeland does not sell!”, And on the adjacent boulevards, the drivers used their horns to accompany the crowd.

A difficult time for mile

Chosen in 2023, Javier Milei has implemented a massive reduction program of public spending, in accordance with his promises, and, without surprise, rejected these two measures on September 10.

Now, the protesters intend to maintain the pressure to ensure the Senate vote.

The Parliament also voted against the president's decision in the case of a law on social benefits for people with disabilities.

The new vote confirms the difficult time that Javier Milei, 21 -month president, who suffered a clear defeat in the regional elections, considered a test in the perspective of the legislative elections since the mid -term, from the end of October.

On Sunday, Milei presented his draft budget for 2026, without deviating from the austerity policy in order to balance the budget, which he considers “non-negotiable”.

Against the backdrop of inflation, the president assured that “the worse has passed” in terms of austerity, yet acknowledging that many Argentinians “did not feel” the economic stabilization.

Following the electoral defeat, he promised for 2026 increases over inflation for pensions, education and health, fields severely affected by budget reductions during his mandate.

“The rights are not negotiated”

Teachers, pensioners and employees in the healthcare system, including doctors and nurses at Garrahan Pediatric Hospital, stressed that they can no longer wait.

The Council of Public Universities has estimated, in turn, that the announced budget only “consolidates the losses suffered” in terms of salaries or operation and “deepening the adjustment imposed on the university and scientific system”.

This body estimates that almost 7,300 billion fishermen ($ 4.9 billion) are needed for higher education to “work normally”, and not the 4,800 billion fisherman promised for 2026 miles.

Axel Kicillof, the peroneal (center-left) governor of the province of Buenos Aires, considered the great winner of the September 7 elections and the hope of the opposition in the perspective of the presidential elections of 2027, greeted on Wednes. it is negotiated ”.
