Ukraine has sorting stations and tracks that work once a year for several cars. Instead of optimizing routes, Ukrzaliznytsia continues to keep this infrastructure. Because of this, the company has 16 billion losses a year, says Alexander Kalenkov, President of Ukrmetalurgprom OP.
The cost of maintaining unprofitable UZ stations through freight tariffs is transferred to customers who do not use these stations. “It was if you came to the cafe with tea, and you were told to share the bill with customers who ordered lobsters,” Kalenkov says.
He is convinced that all this small infrastructure, which cannot pay for himself, should be preserved, and the cost of keeping it is optimized.
“Ukrzaliznytsia should stop playing financial focuses and act in the interests of the market, not in the interests of maintaining their own inefficiency,” Kalenkov summed up.
