Aryna Sabalenka, the first finalist at the US Open
The duel in the semifinals was extremely balanced, much more disputed than the triumph in two sets of Sabalenka in front of Pegula 12 months ago, when the 27 -year -old won the third Grand Slam title, all on the hard surface.
Since then, Sabalenka has been a finalist at the Australian Open in January, where she lost in front of Madison Keys, as well as Roland Garros in June, when she was defeated by Coco Gauff. Then, in July, she was eliminated in the semifinals at Wimbledon by Amanda Anisimova.
This time, Sabalenka again demonstrated its strong service, succeeding 8 aces and losing only two games on its own service. Both opponents made 4 double mistakes, and the athlete from Belarus materialized three of his break opportunities.
Pegula started better, played the first set excellent and won the psychological duel. Americanca gave up a break in the sixth range, allowing Sabalenka to take over 4-2. Then, however, the representative of the hosts “exploded” with four consecutive games, the last one even winning it at Zeto, and closed the first part with 6-4 in his favor.
In the second set, Sabalenka demonstrated its physical strength and started with a series of three consecutive games. Then, the opponents went head to head, and at 5-3, Pegula managed to save a set. This was no longer repeated, and at the second attempt, Aryna closed the sleeve, equaling at sets.
Thus, the semifinal reached the decisive set, in which Sabalenka continued its domination and achieved a break. Then, the events in the second part were repeated, and the two players began to change a range. Pegula tried to equalize in the 10th range and even saved two match balls. At the third attempt, however, Sabalenka was impeccable and won the game.
In the final, the Belarus athlete will play against the winner of the match between Naomi Osaka and Amanda Anisimova. This will be the third consecutive final for Sabalenka, after losing the decisive match in front of Cori Gauff, and in 2024 he even defeated Jessica Pegula.
