Indonesia's political parties have agreed to revoke a number of advantage and privileges for parliamentarians, President Prabowo Subaianto announced on Sunday, in an attempt to calm the anti-government protests that led to the death of five people and caused the largest acts of violence in recent decades in the largest economy of South-East Asia.

The protests started on Monday as demonstrations against too high wages and accommodation allowances for parliament. The demonstrations became violent on Friday after a motorcyclist was killed during police intervention during a protest.

The houses of some politicians and buildings of the provincial parliaments have been robbed or set. The violence also had an impact on the national scholarship and currency.

Concessions, considered insufficient by protesters

In a press conference held at the Presidential Palace, President Prabowo, flanked by parties leaders, said he ordered the army and police to act harshly against violent protesters and robbers, warning that some of their actions indicate “terrorism” and “betrayal”.

“The leaders in the Parliament have agreed to revoke some of the parliamentary policies, including the size of the allowances for its members and a moratorium for travel abroad,” Prabowo said.

The decision was made following a meeting between the Government members responsible with the president, who canceled his visit to China. They arrived at the Presidential Palace in cars with ordinary registration numbers, not the ones that the dignitaries receive. The effective of the army were dislocated for the additional guard of the palace and the dwellings of the ministers.

Muzammil Ihsan, the leader of the Confederation of Student Organizations, who initially convened the protests, said that the reduction of the privileges of the parliamentarians “is not sufficient” and that other demonstrations are taken into account. “The government has to solve problems with deep roots. The anger on the streets is not without cause,” said Ihsan.

Tegar Afriansyah, the leader of the League for Democracy of Indonesian students, said that the president's announcement does not solve the main problem that is “political oligarchy and an unequal economic structure.”

Parliaments set on fire, the houses of robbed dignitaries

Indonesian protesters set fire to the buildings of regional parliaments in three provinces during Saturday protests, one day after three people were killed in the violence that have included the country since the beginning of the week, a major test for President Prabowo Subaianto, reports Reuters. The revolts were caused by a recent increase in the salaries of the parliamentarians.

The local press reported that the parliamentary buildings in West Nusa Tenggara, Pekalongan and Cirebon were set fire to. Detik.com writes that the Cirebon parliamentary offices were plundered, and in Pekalongan and West Nusa Tenggara the police used tear gas to disperse the protest.

The arson of parliamentary buildings occurred after, in the previous day, in Makassar, the capital of Sulawesi province, there was a protest in which at least three people died, and five others were injured.

The Agency for Emergency Situations did not give details about the number of victims in the fire on Friday, but the State Agency Antara said that the victims were caught in the fire that included the building of the province's Parliament. The agency wrote that two people were injured after jumping on the window to get rid of flames.

The Tiktok platform announced on Saturday that it will suspend the live transmission function for a few days in Indonesia, due to the violent demonstrations that take place in this country for several days, AFP reports.

“Due to the escalation of violence during Indonesia demonstrations, we voluntarily decided to introduce security measures to maintain Tiktok as a safe and civilized space. As a precautionary measure, Tiktok Live is temporarily suspended for several days in Indonesia,” said a Tiktok spokesman.
