The return from the holiday, after the World Swimming Championships in Singapore, of the Italian sportsmen Benedeta Pilato (bronze medal at 50 m bras) and Chiara Tarantino has become a nightmare at the airport in Singapore, writes the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
According to the first information, the police arrested the two Italian swimmers. They were surprised by the surveillance cameras before embarking on the return flight to Italy. The reason? Chiara Tarantino would have put stolen objects in Benedette Pilato's bag. Therefore, the two athletes were stopped. Both had the confiscated passports, were interrogated and accused of theft. The Italian Embassy in Singapore was alerted, and the president of the Italian swimming federation, Paolo Barelli, was informed.
The intervention of the foreign minister
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani was forced to intervene to solve the problem. Pilato and Tarantino apologized and promised they would behave properly.
