– Currently, proceedings are underway for modern scanners, in which two consortia take part. We want the process of installing new scanners to start as soon as possible, immediately after the end of the summer 2025 – said the spokesman for Polish airports (PPL) and Chopin Airport Anna Dermont.

She added that the proceedings include 15 security control lines.

– New scanners will meet the latest standards, including for not taking electronics from hand luggage, as well as control of containers with fluids above 100 ml, which will significantly speed up safety control – she explained.

She said that in the future she also intends to introduce similar PPL scanners at airports in Radom and Zielona Góra.

In recent days, the European Commission has approved the abolition of liquid limits at some airports. In ports that use a specific type of safety scanner, a 100 ml limit for liquids transported in luggage will be lifted. There are 700 such devices in the EU, in 21 Member States. It is a new generation of C3 safety scanners at airports with an explosive detection system. They use computed tomography technology to create detailed 3D luggage images, which allows for more effective detection of prohibited objects.

In Poland, they already have airports in Lublin and Poznań. In February this year, the Lublin airport, as the first airport in the country, launched two lines with modern CT scanners to support passenger hand luggage. In turn, in April this year. The Poznań-Ławica airport has launched control lines equipped with modern luggage x-ray in the III standard.

At the turn of the year, such scanners should appear at the airport in Jasionka, where the purchasing procedure is currently underway. Similarly, the Kraków Airport airport strives to implement new EU regulations as soon as possible. “The equipment we have is on the list of devices enabling the abolition of these restrictions, however, so that they can fully replace the existing procedures, they still have to undergo the appropriate certification process. We hope that it will happen quickly” – PAP explained PAP spokeswoman Kraków Airport Monika Chylaszek.

Due to the technical problem last year, the European Commission introduced a temporary ban on using new devices. The EC decision announced in recent days means green light for a specific type of advanced scanners. At the airports that use them, passengers will not have to remove fluids and laptops from luggage during safety control. At these airports, there will also be no liquid limit of up to 100 ml in hand luggage. (PAP)
