Volodimir Zelenskii said that Ukraine is working on the rapid development of intercepting drones to counteract Russian drones that have attacked Ukrainian cities in increasing numbers in recent weeks, reports Reuters.
The announcement comes after Ukrainian officials have pointed out the vertiginal increase in the number of shahed drones used by Russia per night and said it is vital to develop a technology capable of dealing with the threat they represent.
“We work separately on intercepting drones, which are intended to improve the protection against shahed drones,” Zelenski said in his Friday night video speech.
“Several of our national companies – and, therefore, different types of drones – give results. The production volume of interceptors is already increasing,” he added
The Russian forces carried out attacks with over 400 drones per night, and several times were launched with over 470 such air devices.
A total of 440 drones-plus 32 missiles-were launched this week in a “combined” attack on Kiev, which destroyed part of an apartment block and killed 28 people.
Ukraine does not afford to fight rocket drones
“The air defense with drones will help us use our means rationally. We cannot constantly use the guided air and anti -aircraft missiles, which are in a limited number, and the aviation itself to hunt the enemy drones,” this week said the spokesman of the Air Force, Yuri Ihnat, for the Uknat press.
“The enemy is becoming more and more shahed drone and, therefore, we are looking for different ways to counteract them,” he explained.
Zelenski and other officials said that domestic drone production is a key element in national defense, and production has increased dramatically from practically non -existent before the Russian invasion of February 2022.
The president told foreign armament producers in November last year that Ukraine could produce 4 million drones a year and that they quickly intensify its production of other weapons.
Ukraine also used drones against a variety of targets in Russia, mainly industrial and military. In a major operation at the beginning of last month, Ukrainian drones attacked strategic bombers on different Russian aerodromes.
