“Not at the moment, but I will have more discussions on the subject”, The president replied, asked by journalists if he already has a candidate for the position of constitutional judge.
Nicușor Dan stressed that the political independence of those who compose the Constitutional Court is essential: “I think the CCR must be as balanced as possible and you will see, my appointment will be apolitical”, he added.
The mandates of three judges, near the end
The 9 -year mandate of three constitutional judges – Marian Enache, Livia Stanciu and Attila Varga – will expire in June. The three were decorated by former President Klaus Iohannis shortly before he announces his resignation.
According to the law, the President of Romania, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies each designate a judge at the Constitutional Court.
Nicușor Dan reiterated a theme sustained in the election campaign, when he promised that he would advocate for the modification of the law of operation of the RCC, so that only experienced magistrates can be appointed constitutional judges.
Critics to the CCR for secreting assets
The president criticized the recent decision of the Constitutional Court, which stipulates that the declarations of wealth and interests no longer have to include the goods and income of the spouses and children of the officials.
“It is a surprising decision and in contradiction with an essential principle of democracy – transparency”, said Nicușor Dan. He asked the Parliament to quickly correct the possible legislative gaps that were the basis of the CCR decision.
