In an extremely tense electoral context also against the background of the political crisis, Antal Arpad, the mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe, has warned that the country is in a moment of “historical turning”, but believes that the Romanian society has the necessary resources to reject the ascension of the extremism represented by the Golden candidate, George Simion.
“I believe that the Romanian society has sufficient resources to stop extremism. There is that silent, normal, critical majority, and criticizes for many points of view, which usually does not go to vote, but I am convinced that it will mobilize and say a big stop for Simion and extremism. That is why I am optimistic. be harder, but not impossible. (…) The extremists have never brought solutions and never had answers to the real problems of society (…) How can Nicuşor Dan win? It's simple. Two million people who stayed at home in the first round have to mobilize and say “Stop Simion”. And things are solved. I believe that we are a very lucky generation, that we see how the world changes in our time and we are part, and not only part, but to a small extent we are the ones who can influence things, the course of history ”, said Antal Arpad on Thursday at a press conference.
The representative of the UDMR believes that a possible victory of George Simion in the second round of the presidential elections would be “disastrous” not only from an economic point of view, because there is a risk that European funds will be blocked, but also in terms of image, which would make investors detour Romania.
“The country is in an economic and budgetary disastrous situation (…) Anyone who wins, the situation will be difficult, but if Simion wins, the situation would be catastrophic. The European funds would be blocked, the foreign investors would leave the country, they would close factories, they would lose jobs. he said.
Regarding strictly the Hungarian community, the mayor of Saint George warned that the rights won in the last decades are in danger, knowing that George Simion has been firmly against the use of Hungarian in the public space and in the state institutions.
And from the perspective of the Hungarian community, we should defend our institutions that we have created over the last 35 years. This is, if we need to defend them, because we know that Simion wants Hungarian to be eliminated from the public space and institutions and to be withdrawn only between the walls of our homes. I also lived this period in which Ceausescu and all the same thing, let's talk only at home in Hungarian ”, said Antal Arpad, quoted by Agerpres.
He stressed that the UDMR and the Hungarian community are elements of “stability and seriousness” in the Romanian society, the latest proof being the support of Crin Antonescu's candidacy for the Presidency of Romania.
“Basically, what we said, what we promised, exactly this happened. If the coalition partners did what we did, then, today we would be in another movie, in another situation, but this did not happen (…) For those extremists who think if they won Simion, the Hungarians would run from Romania, Heavy than Simion could bring us and then I did not run. said Mayor Antal Arpad.
