According to Merz: “Ukraine is a European country that is at war. And a country that is at war cannot become a member of NATO or the European Union.”
At the same time, he assured that Ukraine has a perspective of membership in the European Union and NATO, however, as he repeated: “In order for both these events to happen, the war must end first.”
The politician also warned against the underestimation of Russia's immunity. Cruel use of people has always been part of Russian politics – noted the head of the CDU. There is no great hope that the war of Russia in Ukraine will end alone at some point, “because the country will be bled or a political reaction against the regime will occur,” added the future German chancellor.
