President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for 75 days that the Chinese company Byte Dance had to sell Tiktok operations in the United States to a buyer to be Chinese, otherwise the application is to be forbidden. According to a law of 2024, Tiktok should have been banned since January, informs Reuters.
“The sales agreement requires more work to obtain all the necessary approvals,” Trump wrote on social media, explaining why he extends the deadline in January and which should have expired on Saturday. “We hope to collaborate with good faith with China, which I understand is not very pleased with the mutual customs taxes we have applied,” Trump continued.
China is facing 54% customs duties on the goods it exports to the United States after Trump announced this week that it increases by 34%, which has led to a similar reaction from Chinese. Trump said he would be willing to reduce the taxes imposed on China if Byte Dance will sell the application used by 170,000,000 Americans.
A spokesman for Byte Dance announced on Friday that this company “discussed with the US government on a potential solution on Tiktok US. An agreement has not ended. There are essential issues that need to be solved. Any understanding will have to be in accordance with the Chinese law.”
Trump said his administration was in contact with four different companies on the purchase of Tiktok, but did not specify them.
Tiktok, close to ban on the US. Who are the giants who want to buy the network before the deadline?
A major obstacle to reaching an agreement is the approval of the Chinese government. China has not publicly announced that it will allow Tiktok operations to be sold in the US, and Trump's comments suggest that there is a Chinese opposition.
“We are waiting to collaborate with Tiktok and China to reach an agreement. We do not want Tiktok to enter the dark,” said Trump
The Congress adopted the law in 2024 with overwhelming bipartisan support, its members invoking the risk that the Chinese government will be used by Tiktok to spy on Americans and to carry out influence operations.
Some congressmen said Trump should have applied the law, by which Tiktok would have ceased to operate on the American territory on January 19, if until then it is not sold. Trump decided not to apply this provision and gave a new deadline.
Also in January, the Department of Justice sent Apple and Google to not ban the application, which caused them to do it again available for download.
The new 75 -day term given by Donald Trump gives TIKTOK to sell tiktok until mid -June.
