Patient associations ask the Government not to cancel the tax exemptions for people with severe and accentuated disabilities. The Executive adopted, at the meeting on September 1, a draft law initiated by the Ministry of Finance, which stipulates that, starting January 1, 2026, persons with disabilities, with accentuated or serious degree, lose the execution of tax on the building and on the car.
The Association of Patients with Autoimmune Diseases has sent to the Government and Parliament an open letter entitled “Do not punish people with disabilities for a fragile budget!”, In which it emphasizes that “the rights of persons with disabilities are not negotiated and not cut to the budget rectification. They are part of our dignity as a nation.”
“Today we address you not only as an organization that defends the rights of people with disabilities, but on behalf of thousands of people living in Romania with a daily burden: pain, physical limitations, expensive therapies, continuous struggle for dignity and survival,” write the signature of the letter.
They send to the members of the Government and the parliamentarians that “the draft law by which you want to eliminate the exemptions of taxes for housing, land and means of transport hits directly in these people. For many, these facilities have never been like a bonus, but the only air mouth that allowed them to keep their house, to have a safe roof, or to work, or to work.
“Marginalization and poverty”
For a family in which a child has a serious disability, this measure “means to be forced to choose between the payment of the tax and the payment of the drugs,” say the representatives of the patients.
“For an adult in a rolling chair, it means the risk of losing its adapted car, the one that helps to go to the doctor, shopping or other necessary things,” they add.
And the Romanian Association of Patients with Primary Immunodeficiers has sent an open letter showing that the cancellation of tax exemptions for people with disabilities represents “a direct attack on fundamental rights”.
“People with primary immunodeficiencies and other disabilities are already living with huge expenses for treatments, therapies and adaptations. Eliminating these exemptions condemns them to marginalization and poverty,” the patients representatives.
The NGO of patients considers that the measure “contravenes the Constitution of Romania (art. 50), violates the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, isolates and vulnerabils even more patients with rare diseases and brings insignificant gains, but huge losses for the lives of patients and their families.”
