Serbia Holds Snap Parliamentary Elections Amid Protests

Vucic votes in Serbia’s parliamentary elections

Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections are underway, featuring 18 electoral lists with a total of 2,418 candidates vying for 250 parliamentary seats. Over 6.45 million citizens are eligible to vote, with polling stations remaining open until 8 PM local time.

As of 11 AM, voter turnout stood at 27.3%, nearly double that of the previous parliamentary elections during the same time frame in 2023. Observers noted long lines at polling stations in Belgrade, indicating heightened public interest.

The primary contest is between the electoral list led by former President Aleksandar Vucic, called “Aleksandar Vucic – United Serbia,” backed by the Serbian Progressive Party, and the “Student List.” Pre-election polls suggested a competitive race, although estimates from sociologists varied.

According to preliminary results published, the Serbian Progressive Party is leading with approximately 47% of the votes, while the “Student List” has around 40%. Journalists reported that the student movement has emerged as a significant challenge to Vucic’s authority, posing a threat to his 14-year dominance over the fragmented opposition.

Vucic, who stepped down as president on September 27, is aiming to retain political influence and hopes to lead the government if his party secures victory. The “Student List” advocates for anti-corruption measures, transparency in governance, and democratic reforms, contrasting Vucic’s focus on economic growth and infrastructure projects.

The election campaign is taking place against a backdrop of ongoing protests that erupted following the tragic collapse of a roof at a railway station in Novi Sad, resulting in 16 fatalities in November 2024, and large-scale demonstrations against the government.
