Gică Hagi Promises Focus on Quality Over Quantity for Romania’s National Team

Gică Hagi, the 61-year-old coach of the Romanian national football team, has reacted following his team’s fourth consecutive loss in the Nations League, a 0-1 defeat to Sweden at the National Arena.

The “Tricolors” managed to hold off for only 13 minutes when Viktor Gyokeres capitalized on a defensive mistake, scoring early and repeating his success from the previous match in Solna, where Sweden won 2-1. Hagi displayed visible frustration after the goal, gesturing animatedly towards his coaching staff and urging players for greater focus on passing.

Looking ahead to the matches in November, where Romania will play their final two games in the Nations League group stage, Hagi announced a shift in approach, prioritizing quality over quantity in player selection, a reference to the number of players called up for the first four games.

Post-Match Reflections from Gică Hagi

“It was important for us. The fans play a vital role for Romania; they bring energy and connection to the players. Despite the loss, we showed good performance and could have done more,” Hagi stated. He emphasized the need for the team to develop a stronger mentality and aggressiveness, particularly in the opponent’s half, believing that with effort, victories would eventually follow.

“For the last few months, I have been observing the criticism and discussions, and many have stated that we are at a low point. Therefore, there needs to be a process to elevate the standard where Romanian players and the national team develop a winning mentality,” he added.

Hagi acknowledged the potential of the group and stressed the importance of applying pressure in the opponent’s half. He remarked on the need for the players to avoid becoming fatigued chasing the ball, as seen in previous matches.

“If I remain in charge, the team must execute both phases of play effectively and transition well. We need to focus on possession and ensure creativity in our attacking plays. The players must not fear playing in the opponent’s half,” he explained.

“It’s crucial to be quick. The players are getting to know me better, which is why I selected 30 players—to familiarize them with my approach. From November, the focus will clearly be on quality, not quantity,” Hagi concluded.

Reflecting on the consecutive defeats, he acknowledged, “I have lost four matches; what can I say?! We will discuss the situation and determine our path forward. I cannot comment on my job at this moment; we will see in the coming days!”
