In a recent statement, German Chancellor Merz highlighted the nation’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia. Merz’s remarks came during a discussion about the meeting between German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
He noted that Germany is engaged in extensive diplomatic efforts, including the aforementioned meeting with Lavrov. However, Merz expressed concern over Russia’s lack of interest in serious negotiations based on its subsequent evaluation of the talks. He assured that Germany would continue to assist Ukraine not only militarily but also politically, financially, and economically, emphasizing strong consensus within the European Union on this matter.
“Russia will not win this war and will suffer immense losses, especially in its economy. We can already see how vulnerable the Russian economy is. If Russia continues this war, it will have to pay for it,” stated Merz.
He also expressed hope that the EU would prepare Ukraine for the upcoming winter, particularly regarding energy supplies. Merz warned against underestimating the situation, acknowledging that Russia would continue to target Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. He expressed commitment to doing everything possible to help Ukraine endure what could be a very difficult winter ahead.
