The British authorities have declared a major incident, prompting the evacuation of residents from a village close to a Royal Air Force (RAF) base hosting United States Air Force operations, according to reports from BBC and Sky News.
Residents of Whelford, situated near RAF Fairford, have been relocated to a recreation center while investigations continue, as announced by Gloucestershire police.
Several men were arrested on suspicion of violating the Explosives Act, police confirmed.
An Army bomb disposal team is currently examining multiple vehicles in the area.
“The area is currently cordoned off, but we want to assure the public that we believe this incident is under control. We are working closely with our partners and implementing our well-rehearsed plans,” stated Gloucestershire police.
Security Measures Intensified in Recent Days
Whelford is known for its proximity to RAF Fairford, which hosts a significant number of US Air Force personnel and carries out various operations.
Security measures at the airbase have been significantly heightened in recent days, with roadblocks and armed officers preventing access, as well as emergency vehicles stationed nearby, according to a Reuters witness.
A spokesperson for the US Air Force stated that they are aware of the current situation but will not comment on specific protective measures.
“The 501st Combat Support Wing and our other wings stationed in the UK remain vigilant and will take appropriate steps to ensure the safety and security of our military members, civilians, contractors, and their families,” the spokesperson added.
In July, the UK indicated that its armed forces are prepared to protect the country against any attacks, following warnings from Iranian Revolutionary Guards prohibiting US bombers from taking off from Fairford.
British ministers have also informed critical infrastructure operators about the threats posed by Russia, with the government increasingly concerned about potential sabotage operations and cyberattacks.
