During the London premiere of his latest film, “Digger,” Tom Cruise discussed artificial intelligence (AI) amid ongoing debates within Hollywood about the use of new technologies in filmmaking.
Speaking at a BAFTA event, the star of the “Mission: Impossible” series was asked how AI might alter the film industry, as reported by Euronews.com. In a six-minute monologue, he underscored the significance of human connection in art and how cinematic experiences unite audiences.
Cruise stated, “I have nothing against streaming services or things like that,” but emphasized that watching a film in theaters represents “a different form of art.” He acknowledged that the broader use of AI in film production is “coming and will definitely happen.”
He added, “Look, nothing compares to humanity. But people want to see real things. They want that experience. They go to theaters. I always believe in humanity.” The actor, known for performing his own stunts with minimal reliance on computer-generated imagery (CGI), concluded that amidst the rise of AI, human creators must “continue to create.”
Controversies Surrounding AI in Hollywood
The topic of AI usage has sparked controversy in Hollywood, with figures like Martin Scorsese and George Lucas facing criticism for their support of AI. Recently, Gal Gadot commented on her upcoming role in the film “Bitcoin,” which has drawn scrutiny for its use of AI to create sets and lighting. She admitted, “I’m afraid of AI, but am I going to sit with fear and look away? No.”
Gadot continued, “I’m scared, but I play with it, study it, and try to inform myself. The train has already left the station. You either work with it or you’re completely out of the game.” Conversely, other creators like Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, Kane Parsons, and Guillermo del Toro firmly reject AI in cinema.
