President Trump has unveiled plans for a new Triumph Arch in Washington, D.C., which will include provisions for storing a large number of drones for rapid deployment. According to Trump, the design also features snipers positioned on the roof and in the surrounding area, accompanied by significant ammunition stockpiles.
“There will be no similar structure anywhere in the world. Among the 59 largest cities and capitals, Washington, D.C., is the only one without a Triumph Arch, but now it will emerge as undoubtedly the grandest of them all!” he emphasized.
Trump stated that this initiative was undertaken at the request of the United States Armed Forces and for reasons of national security.
Reuters noted that similar national security justifications have previously been used by American presidents, such as in defending the construction of the ballroom complex on the site of the former East Wing of the White House. However, no specific threats were identified. A U.S. military representative informed the agency that the Department of Defense had no additional comments beyond Trump’s social media post.
The arch is set to be constructed near Arlington National Cemetery, inspired by the Parisian Triumph Arch. It aims to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence and will be situated close to the memorial of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.
However, the project has already sparked legal disputes, as reported by Reuters. A group of veterans and an architectural historian argue that congressional approval is necessary for its implementation. A court has mandated that the administration provide at least two days’ notice before any work begins on the site. Additional concerns have arisen regarding the proximity of the proposed structure to Ronald Reagan National Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration concluded that the arch would not pose a flight risk if a clearly visible “eternal flame” is installed at its summit.
