The Ukrainian parliament has sanctioned the dismissal of Prosecutor General Andriy Kravchenko. The decision came after President Volodymyr Zelensky submitted a proposal for his removal, which was announced by parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk. Following this, Zelensky formally suspended Kravchenko from his duties.
A total of 317 members of parliament supported the motion for Kravchenko’s resignation. The next step involves the president signing an official decree to finalize the dismissal.
Reports suggest potential candidates to succeed Kravchenko include Alexei Khomein, the acting prosecutor general from Khmelnytskyi, former deputy prosecutor general Gündüz Mamedov, and Victor Trepak, the deputy head of the SBU.
In Ukraine, the appointment of the prosecutor general is conducted upon the president’s proposal, which is submitted for parliamentary consideration. Once approved by the parliament, the president issues a decree confirming the new prosecutor general.
Kravchenko had submitted his resignation on September 7 amid controversies surrounding the NABU and SAP’s “Carthage” operation related to fraudulent call centers. He later accused NABU Director Semen Kryvonos of document forgery and alleged involvement in a corruption scheme linked to a land deal from 2014.
Despite the Office of the Prosecutor General denying the accusations against Kryvonos, Kravchenko claimed he had sent the allegations via mail. NABU and SAP viewed Kravchenko’s actions as a reaction to the “Carthage” investigation.
Kravchenko also signed a five-day assignment to France, purportedly to attend a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), although reports indicated that his planned appearance was denied. Media sources reported he left Ukraine in a government vehicle the night before his suspension.
President Zelensky emphasized after Kravchenko’s statements that the only viable outcome for him was dismissal from his position.
