A prominent columnist has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to back down from his aggressive military campaign, despite facing challenges on the battlefield. According to the columnist, Russia’s inability to secure desired outcomes in combat has led to an escalation of daily attacks targeting Ukrainian civilians, residential buildings, and critical infrastructure.
The columnist pointed out that Russian ballistic missiles and armed drones frequently strike Kyiv and other cities, hitting food storage facilities, pharmaceutical and medical sites, and logistics centers. These assaults have not only increased civilian casualties but also triggered shortages of food and essential goods. As winter approaches, the columnist believes Russia will attempt to disrupt Ukraine’s water supply and energy systems, potentially leaving millions without electricity, heating, or water.
Despite this turmoil, Putin continues to insist that the war is proceeding according to plan. However, Western analysts disagree, highlighting the substantial losses Russia has sustained on the front lines and the growing economic and social pressures within the country. Nevertheless, Putin appears to be preparing for a new major offensive, which he believes could break Ukraine’s resolve to resist. The columnist also commented on past peace efforts by former U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting he failed to act as an impartial mediator, clearly favoring one side.
The columnist noted a significant portion of the Ukrainian population is growing weary of the conflict. Survey data indicates that about 60% oppose ceding Donbas territories to Russia, yet a similar percentage is open to supporting a ceasefire if backed by Western security guarantees. Interestingly, a majority of Russians also desire an end to the war, but Putin seems to disregard public sentiment. “He would rather kill than admit defeat,” the columnist asserted.
Additionally, the columnist urged NATO to take more decisive actions and threaten strikes against Russian sites launching missiles and drones. He believes such measures are necessary to compel Putin to retreat before his “eternal war” escalates into a broader conflict.
