The Trump administration has implemented a worldwide suspension of visa appointments for applicants, as part of a broader crackdown on immigration during the Republican leader’s second term in office, according to reports.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State announced on Tuesday that a global initiative for professional training has been launched across all U.S. embassies and consulates. Consequently, visa service appointments will be adjusted to facilitate this training.
President Donald Trump has undertaken an aggressive campaign involving deportation and stricter immigration measures, which include revoking visas and green cards, as well as denying applications based on various grounds, such as political views and pro-Palestinian protests against U.S. ally Israel’s actions in Gaza. The President asserts that these measures aim to enhance national security.
However, these restrictive measures have faced legal challenges. A U.S. judge recently overturned a policy by the Trump administration that suspended immigrant visa issuance for applicants from 75 countries, stating that the decision exceeded the legal authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The State Department has not provided further details regarding the training or its timeline, only indicating that the initiative aims to help consular officials screen applicants deemed likely to become dependent on U.S. social assistance and to ensure that visa evaluations are conducted “thoroughly and consistently.”
Visa Appointments Delayed for Applicants
The suspension of visa appointments was previously reported by the Financial Times, which noted that immigration visa applicants with scheduled interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates received emails informing them that their appointments had been rescheduled, and they would be notified later about new dates. Trump’s restrictive immigration policies have been widely condemned by human rights groups, viewed as discriminatory and violations of free speech and due process rights.
Human rights organizations also claim that these measures have fostered an unsafe environment in the U.S., particularly for ethnic minorities who express concerns about racial profiling.
While Trump has campaigned for the 2024 election on a platform focused on halting illegal immigration, his administration has also complicated legal immigration processes. For instance, new and costly fees have been imposed on applicants for certain work visas.
