In the early hours of the day, Spanish pilots operating under NATO intercepted and destroyed a drone over Romania at 5:01 AM in an uninhabited area, as reported by local authorities. This action was coordinated with the Romanian command center. This incident follows Spain’s recent deployment of an enhanced Air Policing mission in August, responding to earlier airspace violations.
The Romanian Foreign Minister emphasized the country’s strategic position, stating, “Romania stands at the forefront, defending NATO and EU borders. We have informed our allies and will continue to strengthen our defense and deterrence on the eastern flank.” This drone marks the third such unauthorized entry into Romanian airspace and subsequent downing in just three weeks.
In addition to this incident, debris was reported to have washed ashore in Romania ahead of the country’s Armed Forces Day on August 15. Romanian radars have detected over 100 drone attacks occurring just outside its borders near Ukrainian ports along the Danube River. The Foreign Minister condemned these actions as attempts to disrupt essential food trade vital for global food security and Ukraine’s resilience, labeling the drone strikes as illegal activities that compromise security in the Danube and Black Sea region.
NATO spokesperson Colonel Martin O’Donnell stated that the Alliance remains vigilant and ready to defend against any threats, citing ongoing investigations into the incident that suggest the drone is likely of Russian origin. Reports from the Romanian news outlet Antena3 further indicated the discovery of suspicious objects along the coast of Constanța. One object appeared to be a marine drone found approximately 1.5 kilometers offshore, while another, a rust-covered cylindrical metal item, had washed ashore. Authorities cordoned off the area, confirming after inspection that the items did not contain explosives and were neither drones nor naval mines.
