David Lăpuște Praises Brother Sebastian’s Success at U16 European Championship

David Lăpuște, a 21-year-old quadruple Romanian champion and player in the National Men’s Basketball League, recently shared insights about his younger brother, 15-year-old Sebastian Lăpuște, who had a remarkable showing at the U16 European Basketball Championship. David highlighted what he has learned from recent seasons and shared his hopes for the future.
The Romanian men’s basketball team advanced to the quarter-finals at the U16 European Championship held in Oradea, with Sebastian playing a pivotal role in their success.
With outstanding performances, the junior player, who competes in Spain for CD Distrito Olimpico, caught the attention of the entire continent. He concluded the tournament with averages of 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and an efficiency rating of 21.7.
Basketball runs in the Lăpuște family: Sebastian’s great-grandfather introduced him to the sport at an early age, while his father Flavius, a former player and coach, guided him as he grew. David, also a basketball player in the National League, has provided support with advice and encouragement.
“He is the fifth player in U16 EuroBasket history to record a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals, and 8 assists,” noted David.
David Lăpuște on His Brother’s Development: “A Well-Rounded Player”
In an interview, David expressed his pride in Sebastian’s achievements at the U16 European Championship. “It’s wonderful! I remember fondly my days playing at the U18 and U20 European Championships. I couldn’t be prouder of him, given the brilliant performances he has delivered on such a high stage and the continuous maturity and development he exhibits,” he stated.
David described Sebastian as a well-rounded player for his age, emphasizing his capability to find solutions in one-on-one situations. He was present in the stands at Oradea Arena, cheering for his younger brother.
“I always provide him with advice, depending on the situation he is in or the upcoming game. Typically, I try to present the context he is facing and explain what to expect and what I believe he should do in various situations,” he shared.
David also focuses on the mental and emotional aspects of the sport, aiming to give Sebastian a boost of confidence before important games. “Ultimately, everything depends on him, and I have complete trust in his abilities and inner strength,” he concluded.
David Lăpuște’s Wishes for His Brother: “To Stay Healthy”
“Those moments are priceless; that’s how we grew together and formed the beautiful bond we have now, which is irreplaceable. When we were younger, I always won against him, and it frustrated him, but it’s possible that the tide will turn soon, so we’ll have to wait a bit to see,” he said.
When asked what he desires most for Sebastian, David responded, “More than anything, I want Sebi to stay healthy because I know that in those circumstances, he will reach the level and place he needs, as he possesses all the necessary tools to achieve great things in this sport. Additionally, he is surrounded by people who wish him well and will do everything possible to support him with whatever he needs.”
David Lăpuște’s Future in Basketball: “Uncertain”
Having played for U-BT Cluj-Napoca from 2021 to 2024 and winning four consecutive titles, David transferred to SCM Timișoara in 2024 and played for CSM Corona Brașov in the 2025-2026 season.
“Currently, my future is uncertain; I don’t know 100% where I will play next season, but I hope that with a bit of luck, I will get the ideal opportunity I’m expecting,” he mentioned.
He indicated that he has worked on enhancing aspects of his game this summer and has significantly improved them. “I also took some time to rest and recover to start the next season strong,” he added.
Reflecting on his season in Brașov, he noted that it was his best individually, as he received more playing time and was able to develop further.
“Indeed, there were challenges, stress, and unpleasant situations because as a team, we didn’t achieve our desired goal, but I always choose to look at things positively to ensure I learn from every experience,” David concluded.
Looking back, he is grateful for the six seasons spent in the LNBM that shaped him as both a player and a person, providing numerous lessons.
“The most important lesson I’ve learned over the years is that nothing is easy and nothing will be handed to you for free in this sport or any other,” he emphasized.
“Basketball is a significant part of my life, but the last six years of playing professionally have also shown me that discipline and hard work are the two essential elements needed by any athlete on their path to success. There are still many things for me to experience and learn, as I am just at the beginning of my career, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for me,” he concluded.
In the 2025-2026 season of the National League, David Lăpuște averaged 6.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
