Authorities in Kyiv reported a significant die-off of fish in three water bodies in the Borshchahivka community, which began on August 10 following the discharge of untreated wastewater during sewer repairs in the Svyatoshyn district. Over 15,000 fish and crustaceans, totaling about three tons, have perished, resulting in environmental damages estimated at over 36.5 million UAH. Access to these water bodies has been restricted, with plans for the removal and disposal of the dead biomass, and a criminal investigation has been launched regarding the pollution incident.
The Ministry of Health indicated that specialists, in collaboration with the Borshchahivka Village Council and the municipal enterprise “Blagoustroistvo Sofiivky”, collected 17 samples: four from drinking water sources near residential areas, six from the affected water bodies, and seven soil samples.
Initial findings suggest potential contamination of the waters, particularly with organic compounds. Testing of the drinking water and soil is ongoing, with results expected to be released on August 17.
- Avoid drinking water from wells, boreholes, and local fountains (opt for bottled or delivered water);
- Do not swim in or enter the water;
- Do not fish or consume fish from unknown sources;
- Avoid watering gardens or livestock with water from the affected bodies;
- Do not allow children or pets near the water.
Officials stressed that these restrictions do not apply to water from the central supply system.
“Clear water does not mean it is safe. Neither color, odor, nor taste can indicate chemical contamination. Boiling does not eliminate chemical pollutants, as it is effective only against microorganisms. Household filters are also not reliable for this situation,” warned the health center.
Residents experiencing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, or skin and eye irritation after contact with the water are urged to contact their family doctor and inform them of their water exposure.
