Lithuania is set to strengthen its border defenses by excavating ditches along its borders with Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. These ditches will measure 20 meters in width, with some areas extending up to 150 meters. The implementation of this initiative is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
In addition to the ditches, the Lithuanian government has approved plans to restore wetlands by 2030. “After restoring the hydrological regime of the area, it could become difficult for heavy machinery to pass through without complex engineering equipment within a few years,” stated the government.
The country is also continuing to establish barriers on designated army road sections and access routes to bridges. Special structures are planned for installation on bridges, intended for the attachment of explosives that can be utilized in the event of a military threat.

- In July, Lithuania’s Defense Minister Robertas Karpis indicated that as Russia struggles to defeat Ukraine, the Kremlin is likely seeking alternative strategies, potentially targeting the Baltic states and Poland. He noted that Lithuania has already enhanced the protection of critical infrastructure, including bridges, electrical substations, gas networks, and communication hubs.
