NATO ambassadors convened on Wednesday in the North Atlantic Council to address recent airspace violations in Romania and Poland, alongside incidents involving drones, according to a statement from the Alliance.
Representatives expressed their full solidarity and support for the affected allies, as highlighted in the press release. NATO emphasized that “Russia bears full responsibility for the airspace violations, which are dangerous and unacceptable, demonstrating an increasing tolerance for risk from Russia.”
The allies affirmed their unity and determination in defending allied territory. They praised NATO’s swift responses and the decisive actions taken by national authorities. The Alliance continues to enhance its integrated air and missile defense across its member states, with allies underscoring efforts to bolster defenses along the eastern flank from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. NATO is prepared to deter and defend against any aggression, the statement noted.
Support for Ukraine was also reiterated. “Allies reaffirmed their full support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity while pursuing peace. They emphasized that they will not be deterred by Russia’s irresponsible actions in their enduring commitment to Ukraine, whose security contributes to ours,” NATO concluded.
Recent Incidents in Romania and Poland
On July 27, Romania announced the expulsion of a Russian diplomat following the downing of three Russian-origin drones by the Romanian Air Force after they entered national airspace on three consecutive days.
The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Romanian Foreign Ministry to convey a protest. Additionally, the Romanian ambassador to Moscow was recalled to Bucharest for consultations.
Poland also faced issues when, at the end of July, a Russian ballistic missile landed approximately 60 kilometers from Lublin, in the eastern part of the country. Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as “serious,” prompting the Polish government to send a letter of protest to the Russian ambassador in Warsaw, as reported by EFE and cited by Agerpres.
