Three years ago, Ukraine initiated discussions with the United Kingdom regarding security guarantees. The Ukrainian delegation was led by Andriy Yermak, while Timothy Barrow, the UK Prime Minister’s national security adviser, represented the British side. The UK became the second country, after the United States, to engage in this negotiation track with Ukraine.
The foundation of these talks was the “Kyiv Security Agreement,” developed by Yermak’s team in collaboration with former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. This concept became the basis for the G7 declaration and subsequent bilateral agreements.
On January 12, 2024, Ukraine and the United Kingdom signed a security agreement, becoming the first partners to do so, with London announcing the largest defense aid package at that time. Within five months, this new diplomatic track evolved into a cornerstone of long-term security relations between the two nations.
