Jason Arday, a 41-year-old professor at the University of Cambridge, has stepped down this week as the institution launches an investigation into allegations of plagiarism regarding portions of his doctoral thesis.
A significant point of contention is that Arday allegedly plagiarized a quote from Rafael Nadal, a renowned tennis player.

Arday’s forthcoming autobiography, titled “Great and Unfortunate Things,” narrates his journey from being an autistic child who could not read or write until age 18 to becoming the youngest professor of color at Cambridge. In the American edition, he recounts mentally preparing for his job interview at Cambridge as if he were playing a critical tennis match, stating, “Somebody will have to beat you because you will not lose today.”
Although Nadal is mentioned earlier in the book in relation to Arday’s interview preparation, the later inclusion of his quote is not clearly attributed to the former tennis player.
According to the Daily Mail, editors later revised the British edition to clarify that the words were identical to those Nadal used during the fifth set of his epic 2008 Wimbledon final against Roger Federer, which Nadal won.
This revelation comes as Arday, who became the youngest professor of color at Cambridge in 2023, resigns after the university initiated an inquiry into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments.
He faces allegations of having plagiarized not only his thesis but also other research work.
The original version of the upcoming book states: “This was my last chance to experience the pressure of Centre Court under lights, with the roof closed for added drama. Inside, I awaited being called into the interview room behind two imposing dark oak doors. Once again, I was running on the spot, in Rafa’s style. The last thing I told myself in preparation for the most important interview of my life was: ‘Somebody will have to beat you because you will not lose today. You will not drown or give in. Make their lives difficult. Let someone be better than you, but do not retreat, Jason.’”
In the updated version, set to be published on August 27, this has been amended to: “The last thing I told myself in preparation for the most important interview of my life was the same quote that Rafa Nadal told himself in the fifth set against Roger Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon men’s singles final: somebody will have to beat you because you will not lose today.”
The addition of the original source of the quote is among numerous changes made between the American correction in January and the British text, which were previewed this week ahead of the book’s release, according to the aforementioned source.
