FBI Director recently referred to the bureau’s connections with Chinese and Russian authorities as “new and dynamic”. He emphasized that this cooperation focuses on combating cyber fraud, illegal fentanyl trafficking, child exploitation, and fugitive recovery efforts.
According to Patel, the FBI’s partnership with China includes four main areas: cybercrime, child exploitation, drug enforcement, and capturing fugitives. Notably, in May, the FBI coordinated a joint operation with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security and Dubai police, resulting in the arrest of 300 individuals and the seizure of $300 million linked to a cyber fraud operation.
While acknowledging the adversarial stance of Beijing and Moscow on various issues, Patel underscored the necessity of interaction to secure victories for America. “They won’t stop, but if we can go and achieve victories for America, we must engage,” he stated.
However, critics have raised concerns over the risks to counterintelligence due to sharing sensitive information with authoritarian regimes. Patel assured that these risks are being managed and emphasized that the new partnerships will not replace the traditional intelligence alliance known as the “Five Eyes” with the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
