The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, reported an ammonia leak in one of the city’s districts as a result of a Russian shell striking a non-residential building.
Initial assessments from the Kyiv City Military Administration indicated that the attack damaged a system containing approximately 300 liters of ammonia.
Emergency services have managed to localize the leak, and the press service stated, “There is no threat to the population.”
Context
Ammonia is a colorless gas with a sharp, recognizable odor. Even in small amounts, it can severely irritate the eyes, throat, and respiratory system, causing symptoms like tearing, coughing, and choking. Since ammonia is lighter than air, it typically rises, but in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, it can spread and pose a danger to individuals.
