George Blay, the former right-back for both Dinamo and Unirea Urziceni, has passed away at the age of 45.
The former Ghanaian international and player for several seasons in Romania was laid to rest on July 18 in Maryland, which has one of the largest Ghanaian communities in the United States.
Images from the burial ceremony have circulated on social media. Prominent sports journalists from Ghana, including Augustus Koranteng Kyei, have confirmed the tragic news.
Carewell Cremations, a funeral home and crematory serving the Maryland area, announced on their official website that Blay passed away on June 21, 2026.
A memorial book has been opened for family and friends to pay their respects.
The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

George Blay: A Celebrated Footballer in Romania
George Blay began his career in his home country at Hasaacas before moving to Standard Liege, a prestigious club in Belgium, in 1997. After five years, he transferred to KV Mechelen, where he played for just one season.
In 2003, he joined La Louviere, and in 2006, he made his first appearance in Romania with Dinamo, the club he represented the most in the country.
He also played for Curtea de Argeș and Unirea Urziceni, ending his career at Antwerp in 2012.
During his time at Dinamo, Blay played 82 matches as a right-back without scoring, but he did provide one assist.
For Curtea de Argeș, he appeared in three matches, and for Unirea Urziceni, he played twelve. His career peak came at Standard Liege, where he made 112 appearances, scoring four goals and delivering three assists.
The only trophy in his collection is the title he won with Dinamo at the end of the 2006/2007 season.
Blay also earned seven caps for the Ghana national team, scoring one goal, including three appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations.
