Joaquín María de Arístegui Laborde, Spain’s ambassador to Buenos Aires, expressed optimism about scheduling a rematch between the World Cup champions and Argentina in November, where Lionel Messi might take part in the Finalissima.
Less than three days after the 2026 World Cup final, discussions are already taking place behind the scenes about a potential rematch for Argentina against Spain, following their controversial defeat at MetLife Stadium in New York (0-1 after extra time).
While the timing and location remain to be confirmed, it seems clear that these two finalists from the tournament hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada might meet again, having missed a scheduled encounter in March.
The Finalissima, which is the intercontinental clash between the European champion and the South American champion, was originally planned in Qatar but was postponed due to the conflict in the Middle East. It could now be held this fall, eight months later than intended.

This proposal comes directly from the Spanish side, who have refrained from causing a scene over the perceived lack of sportsmanship exhibited by their rivals. Laborde has indicated that he envisions this rematch of the East Rutherford final during a FIFA window allocated for national team matches.
“We hope it can happen; it would indeed be a fantastic rematch. As a Barcelona fan, it would be a tribute, a sign of respect and admiration for the greatest footballer of all time, Lionel Messi. A wonderful farewell,” Laborde explained.
Negotiations between the football federations of the two countries previously failed to reach an agreement in the spring regarding hosting the Finalissima in another city and finding a mutually acceptable date. Argentina declined to play in Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu, while Spain was unwilling to compete in America.
Recent hours have seen rumors circulating about the resumption of discussions to potentially schedule the match during FIFA games in November 2026.
