Zelensky Addresses Conflict Leading to Defense Minister’s Dismissal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has clarified the recent dismissal of Defense Minister Oleksii Fedorov, attributing it to ongoing conflicts with military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi. Zelensky described their relationship as a struggle between two differing visions, noting that while Fedorov aims to digitize and modernize the defense system, military leaders express frustration over their operational needs being overlooked.
According to reports, Zelensky stated, “They live in two different worlds. Misha wants to digitalize everything and build a system around technology, while the military just wants to be heard. They request specific types of weaponry, but he refuses and allocates funds elsewhere.” This lack of communication between Fedorov and Syrskyi has reportedly led to absurd situations where both parties blame each other for failures to meet operational requirements.
During discussions with lawmakers, Zelensky emphasized the necessity of balancing military and governmental relationships in a country at war. He remarked, “I cannot allow the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff to be at odds during wartime. Ideally, both should be changed, but I cannot do that all at once.”
One member of Zelensky’s Servant of the People party noted the president’s difficulty in articulating his decision, highlighting that it took him about ten minutes to find the right words to explain his rationale behind Fedorov’s dismissal. Despite the logic of the move, it was evident that this decision weighed heavily on him.
Reports suggest that Fedorov may take over leadership at Ukroboronprom following the resignation of Herman Smetanin, although this decision is still being discussed.
