Thomas Tuchel’s Surprising Response Following England’s Defeat to Argentina

After England’s 1-2 loss to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semifinals, coach Thomas Tuchel was left stunned by a question posed by a British television reporter.

The BBC journalist asked Tuchel if he had seen any moments from the tournament that reflected the England team he truly wanted to see. Clearly taken aback, the German coach widened his eyes and took a deep breath before attempting to respond.

Tuchel’s Initial Reaction

“I don’t know. I don’t have an answer to that question. I don’t know what it means. I don’t know,” Tuchel initially responded. After gathering his thoughts, he added, “I believe the mentality was evident in our game. We faced tough opponents in the group stage and overcame many obstacles. Today, against Argentina, we were very close. But it’s not the time to analyze the entire tournament right now.”

Tuchel, who took over as England’s manager on January 1, 2025, signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Football Association. However, following the semifinal defeat, questions arose regarding his future given the tactical criticisms and defensive substitutions made during the match.

Tuchel’s Commitment to England

Despite the loss, Tuchel affirmed his commitment, stating, “First of all, the World Cup is not over; we still have one match to play, the third-place playoff against France, which we are not looking forward to but must play.”

He indicated that he intends to continue with the team, saying, “I have a contract until the upcoming European Championship, and I am looking toward that tournament, even though it is challenging to think too far ahead at the moment.”

During the press conference, he commented on the third-place playoff scheduled for Saturday at midnight, noting, “None of the players want to play this match. We demand the best from ourselves because that’s in the nature of competitors. But none of these players, nor any of the French players, wants to play this match, they want to play in the final instead.”
