Ecuador’s Rocky Statue Curse Warning Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Ecuador became the first team to face a setback at the ongoing tournament, suffering a 0-1 defeat to Ivory Coast. This loss came shortly after their supporters dressed the Rocky Balboa statue outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art in team jerseys.
Constructed in 1982 for the third film in the “Rocky” franchise, the statue was later gifted to the city by actor Sylvester Stallone. Historically, interactions with the statue have proven unlucky for sports teams.
Previous teams to fall victim to the so-called “Rocky Curse” include fans of the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, the New England Patriots during the same year before the Super Bowl, and the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. Each of these teams climbed the famous stairs to the statue and dressed it in their colors only to see their favorites lose their subsequent games.
Visit Pennsylvania Issues a Warning: “Rocky Doesn’t Need Your Gear”
With five more matches scheduled in Philadelphia for the World Cup, “Visit Pennsylvania” has issued a cautionary message. On Instagram, they welcomed delegations from Brazil, Haiti, France, Iraq, Curaçao, Croatia, and Ghana, wishing them luck in their upcoming matches.
They added, “As good hosts, we would like to share some insights about a well-documented phenomenon in Philadelphia: the Curse of the Rocky Statue. We regret that this message wasn’t shared before last weekend, but here we are.”
Numerous football teams have adorned the Rocky statue in their colors and subsequently lost their games. Ecuador dressed Rocky last weekend. Coincidence? Unfortunately, history suggests otherwise. Philadelphia eagerly anticipates your visit! (but Rocky doesn’t need your gear),” concluded the “Visit Pennsylvania” statement.
The Lincoln Financial Field is set to host the Brazil vs. Haiti match on Friday night into Saturday at 03:30 Romanian time, and supporters of both teams are now cautioned.
