Putin and Zelensky called Donald Trump on his birthday. What they discussed separately with the American president

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, held separate phone conversations with Donald Trump on Sunday, on the occasion of the American leader's 80th birthday. The two discussed different topics, but both talks also included the topic of the war in Ukraine, according to AFP and official statements.

Putin and Trump discussed the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, as well as the upcoming visit of emissaries from Washington to Russia, the Kremlin announced.

“The discussion focused mainly on the situation regarding the agreement protocol being drawn up between the United States and Iran. Donald Trump said that an agreement is coming,” Yuri Ushakov, an adviser to the Kremlin, told reporters.

Iuri Ushakov also stated that “it was agreed that the special representatives of the American president, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are currently very involved in Iranian issues, will soon return to Russia”.

On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Donald Trump by phone on the occasion of his birthday. Later, the leader from Kiev announced on the X platform that the discussion was about efforts to end the war.

“We informed the (American, no) president about the latest developments on the battlefield and strengthening of our positions. We agreed to deepen these discussions during a meeting at the G7 summit,” added Volodymyr Zelensky.

Earlier, Ukrainian presidential adviser Dmytro Litvin had informed the press about a “fruitful conversation” that had lasted between 30 and 35 minutes.

In recent months, several rounds of negotiations to find a solution to the US-led war in Ukraine have failed to bring Kiev and Moscow closer to an agreement, with the process stalling as Washington's focus shifted to Iran.

On Tuesday, Volodymyr Zelensky will participate in a working meeting with the leaders of the G7 (international forum of the governments of economically, technologically and militarily developed states: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the USA), who will meet in Evian (in France), in the presence of the American president.
