France is in mourning after the tragedy of an 11-year-old girl. Politicians talk about the dysfunction of the state

The disappearance of 11-year-old Lyhanna from Fleurance in the south of France was reported on May 29, when the girl did not return from school in the afternoon. The person arrested in connection with the case is the father of one of her classmates, who has previously been the subject of several child sexual assault complaints.

In Fleurance, hundreds of people participated in the search for Lyhanna after her disappearance. On Thursday, local authorities announced that a body had been found and is being identified.

“We cannot forget about this.” Politicians talk about the dysfunction of the justice system

Politicians on both the right and left, including far-right leader Jordan Bardella and Green Party leader Marine Tondelier, point to the case as an example of the dysfunctional justice system and its inability to protect women and children from sexual violence.

— We have a family that is mourning their daughter. We cannot forget about this. This is a real dysfunction of the state, of France, said the mayor of Fleurance, Gregory Bobbato, in an interview for the BFM television station.

— As a minister, I am horrified, and as a father even more, by this terrible tragedy that is unfolding, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin told reporters on Thursday evening. He informed that the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Interior will conduct a joint investigation to clarify alleged shortcomings in connection with complaints against the suspect, including the request of the local prosecutor's office to initiate proceedings against him, which did not materialize.
