Folk calendar
Eremey Zapashnik
The holiday was named after Saint Jeremiah, the second of the four great prophets mentioned in the Old Testament.
The saint received his popular nickname because at that time the most important agricultural work was underway in Rus' – plowing and sowing fields. They were debilitating for both farmers and draft animals, and the peasants asked for heavenly help. They believed that at this time the prophet Jeremiah himself harnessed his chariot and helped those who turned to him in prayer. The reason for this belief was probably the consonance of the saint’s name with the word “yoke”.
We also looked at the signs. If it is a fine day on Eremey (Jeremiah), then the grain will also be harvested in good weather. We observed the ants: if they are clean and well-fed, the wheat will grow. In order for the year to be fertile, Eremey refrained from lending—not money, not a piece of bread.
