Krasnoyarsk Rospotrebnadzor dispelled myths about buckwheat

April 21 18:30

The Office of Rospotrebnadzor in the Krasnoyarsk Territory sorted out popular misconceptions about buckwheat and explained why it is really useful.

One of the common myths is that buckwheat supposedly helps increase iron levels in the body. Experts note: 100 grams of dry cereal actually contains about 37% of the daily iron requirement. However, this iron is of plant origin, and the body does not absorb it well. Therefore, you should not count on buckwheat as a means of combating iron deficiency.

Another misconception is related to the treatment of diabetes. Rospotrebnadzor emphasizes that it is impossible to cure the disease with buckwheat. At the same time, cereals can reduce the risk of its development. This is due to the content of the substance D-chiro-inositol, which increases insulin sensitivity.

Experts also commented on the opinion that green buckwheat is healthier than regular buckwheat. According to them, both varieties have their advantages. Green buckwheat that has not undergone heat treatment contains more rutin, a substance that strengthens blood vessels. At the same time, brown buckwheat is rich in niacin (vitamin PP), which helps protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation and reduces the risk of pigmentation.

The department added that buckwheat remains a valuable food product. It contains slow carbohydrates, gives a feeling of fullness for a long time, promotes normal intestinal function and supports the nervous system. In addition, the cereal is suitable for people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance, and is also useful for children's diets.
